“If Heartaches Had Wings”

Ooooh, I just realized that I hadn’t posted a completed picture of these beauties! This is one of my favorite designs, adapted from an old Jay Griffith pattern. This design is titled “If Heartaches Had Wings.”

I’ll read it anyway!

I checked my mail today, and it appears I now have a complimentary subscription to “Horse and Gun” magazine. I’m invited to “Saddle Up, Get Your Gear, and Live The Life.”

I’m a cowboy boot maker. I own lasting pliers, boot lasts, leather, and sewing machines. Unfortunately, I don’t have horses, guns, or saddles.

Completed boots

Here’s a photo of a pair of boots I just completed and shipped. They’re a little plainer than I normally make, but it was a relaxing change of pace.

Boot Progression

Whenever I mail a pair of boots to a client, I include a flash drive with images of the boots as they were being made. Here’s an example:

Smithsonian Craft Show

Ahhhhh… big sigh of relief. I leave tomorrow for the Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, D.C. Today I completed the final pair of boots that I’ll be taking with me, and although I didn’t get the truck loaded, I have everything ready and sitting by the front door of my shop.

Announcement

For everyone who has admired the work of my students and inquired about taking classes, I’m going to post this information:

At this time, I don’t have any cowboy boot making classes planned, nor do I plan to schedule any in the near future. When I teach a class, the student takes off work, rents a hotel, and drives or flies here–it’s a significant expense for them, and I don’t have an assistant teacher. If I get sick or if a member of my family gets sick, it’s very stressful for me to teach full-time AND handle personal stuff that needs to be done. I agreed to have a student here for five weeks once, and both of my husband’s brothers died during that five week span. As much as I love teaching, doing it with no backup plan is exhausting and I’m taking a break.

I do have an 8 DVD of my entire boot making class available. Paige is using it right now to build her second pair of boots and she says it’s very comprehensive and thorough. 🙂

Lacing the shank

Here’s a progress photo of how I put in a steel shank. On the far left is a boot with the steel shank glued in. That obviously wouldn’t last long, so the glue is just to hold it in place until I lace it. In the middle, I’ve added a layer of leather over the steel shank. Finally, on the right, I’ve securely laced-in the covered shank.
