Distracted by design

It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited about a new design — I abandoned my responsibilities and customer orders to make these little boots. I think the reason they intrigue me so much is because I completely ignored the traditional way I’ve always started a design.

One of these is an old design I got from my mentor Jay Griffith and the other is one of my original designs. You can clearly identify the S curve that forms the foundation of each design, and I started with that curve to guide me as I drew.
This photo shows the beginning of the vision for this design. I wanted multiple different shapes of flowers and leaves so I cut out pattern pieces and then began crowding them into the space. The all-white piece was the prototype and the colored one represents the final design. There are no underlying curves, only the desire to completely fill the space while staying safely within the stitch lines.
The design turned out exactly like I wanted and I’m incredibly pleased!
